Concrete that ages well
Notes on mix, formwork and finish from ten years of building in exposed concrete.

Concrete has a reputation for being cold. We think that comes from how it is usually treated: hidden, painted, or poured with no care for the surface. Treated well, it is one of the warmest materials we know.
Start with the formwork
The finish of a concrete wall is decided by the boards it is cast against. We specify rough-sawn spruce, laid in random widths, so the wall carries the memory of the timber.
Let it weather
We avoid sealers wherever we can. Rain, moss and time soften the surface, and after a few winters the building starts to belong to its site.
